Incident response is core to managing an effective and efficient security organization. Somewhat of a misnomer, “incident response,” would be better served if it were positioned as “incident preparedness,” a continuous effort that encompasses planning for an incident (prevention), identifying an incident (detection), handling an incident (response) through recovery and restore, and lessons learned which can be applied to the overall security program. Too many companies, though, view incident response as a set of actions used only when or if an incident is declared. The truth is, incident response can holistically improve an organization’s security program if executed properly.
